Baotaz at Neuromed, the report
The 28th September 2016 Nefula was in Pozzilli (Isernia, Italy) to bring BOATAZ to his new destination: the Neuromed Institute.
If you don’t know what BAOTAZ is, I can say that it is an interactive installation, a wearable technology and an ecosystem that was created during La Cura Summer School to make possible to deal with the planetary interconnection and feel it on our bodies.
Anyway, at first glance BAOTAZ is just a shiny-noisy-big-silicone-brain and a creep-throbbing-helmet.

Nefula was very excited to be at Neuromed, for two main reasons:
The Neuromed Institute isn’t only a center of excellence that conducts research, diagnosis and treatment in the field of neurological disorders, it is also the Institute were Salvatore has his brain surgey. It has an important role in the life of Salvatore and Oriana, in the life of Nefula and obviously in the birth of La Cura project, as it emerge from La Cura Book.
Neuromed is located in Pozzilli, a small town in Molise: a region historically affected by emigration and considered marginal. We were happily surprised to discover in this context an high-tech research center built in the middle of a valley full of olive trees, surrounded by the mountains. An alive and peaceful place.
BAOTAZ at La Notte dei Ricercatori is a precise signal of a growing tension: the possibility to consider art and design a catalyst for science and technology. A tendency which already entered the highest European policy, very well represented by the recent inauguration of new program such as STARTs – Science, Technologies and the Arts. For Near Future Designers is a wonderful opportunity to observe, experience and be part of this transformation.
We, and BAOTAZ, were in Pozzilli to take part at the European Researchers’ Night.
With family, friends, your school or on your own, you will become a scientist for a day, participate in science activities and, most of all, have fun! All the events will take place – simultaneously – on Friday 30 September, in over 250 cities across Europe and neighbouring countries.”
BAOTAZ was exposed in the Neuromed Research Centre hall for three days.
The first two days were dedicated to schools. 1200 students from local High Schools visited the Centre, including the museum, the exhibition and the laboratories.
The last day the Centre was open to the citizens. A lot of people came to take part in the event. There were families, institutions, authorities, local, national and international researchers: here you can find the full program of the day.
It was an amazing experience.
First of all, we felt that BAOTAZ was in the right place.
A playful object in a room full of advanced healthcare technologies, capable to create new imaginaries and to communicate the main message of the project, which perfectly resonates with Neuromed environment. We are very glad that Neuromed understood the main meaning of the project.
That is: Cure exists only in society.
Like healthcare devices, BAOTAZ is a tool to cure people. Not to treat but to cure. Because no patient is alone, and no disease concerns just one person. Thank to BAOTAZ everyone can see and feel on his/her body the planetary interconnection among people. It is a new augmented emphatic sense through which we could investigate ways in which people could connect with each other using technology.
During these three days, while we’ve been explained the project to students, teachers, citizens, researchers and scientists, we had the proof of the importance of BAOTAZ in our technological era.
We find that – especially in healthcare field- the common thought is that technologies are made for single individuals. And, specifically, to analyse, take datas and information from the body of a single individual.
In our imaginary a technological helmet reads mind.
We have not words to describe the surprised and disappointed faces when we explained that BAOTAZ helmet doesn’t read minds but makes possible to feel other people’s emotions on your body.
It’s the end of egocentric tech and the start of empathic tech.
The role of BAOTAZ, as an artistic object, is to be a catalyst for science and technology. BAOTAZ makes us able to have physical visualisation of our hyper-connected world, and to highlight such implications, confronting with them, and raising public discussions.
Thank you to Neuromed, Emilia and Ilaria to host BAOTAZ in Pozzilli.
Thank you to Roberto that helped us to confront with the river of students.
Thank you all for welcomed BAOTAZ in your life.
Let’s Baotazing together!
